Park Ridge will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with a memorial service outside City Hall on Friday, Sept. 11.

The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. near the city's 9/11 memorial at 505 Butler Place, according to the City of Park Ridge. The city said community members are invited to gather to remember the lives lost, honor the sacrifice of first responders and reflect on the events of that day.

The city has not announced speakers or special programming for the milestone anniversary.

Vandalism at the memorial

The memorial site drew attention in early July after two acts of vandalism. On July 1, a security camera captured a man wearing a blue and red bandana and black sunglasses pouring a carton of milk on the memorial's steel beams, the Journal & Topics reported. On July 8, an unknown person left food scattered across the site.

The Park Ridge Police Department was still investigating both incidents as of Aug. 18. No arrests had been announced.

The memorial sits in a prominent spot outside City Hall and features steel beams and engraved bricks purchased by community members. The Park Ridge Fire Department promoted a brick purchase program at the memorial as early as 2018.

What to know

The Sept. 11 service is free and open to the public. The city lists the start time at 8:30 a.m.
