Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge earned recognition among America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Emergency Hospitalization in Healthgrades’ 2027 awards, announced Oct. 27.
Healthgrades evaluated roughly 4,500 hospitals across 31 common procedures and conditions, measuring how well facilities keep patients alive and prevent complications, according to Patch.
Forty-six Illinois hospitals total received some form of specialty care recognition. Northwestern Memorial Hospital ranked among the top 50 for cardiac surgery, and University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics won an award for stroke care.
The specific specialty area behind Lutheran General's top-50 designation was not detailed in the rankings coverage.
How the rankings work
Healthgrades based its analysis on Medicare patient records from 2023 through 2025, examining deaths and complications tied to specific procedures and conditions. Its Specialty Excellence Awards recognize hospitals in the top 15 percent of eligible facilities in a given specialty.
The top-50 and top-100 designations are more selective tiers drawn from that pool, covering four and 11 specialty areas, according to the Healthgrades press release. A hospital recognized in one specialty is not necessarily top-rated in another.
Dr. Alana Biggers, medical advisor at Healthgrades, said the awards help patients find care matched to their specific needs.
Cancer center expected to open in 2028
Lutheran General broke ground Sept. 30 on a $99 million Comprehensive Cancer Center on its Park Ridge campus. The two-story, 77,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in spring 2028, according to Advocate Health Care.
The center will bring medical and surgical oncology, hematology, transplant and cellular therapy, infusion and survivorship services together in one location. Plans include 73 infusion treatment bays, a dedicated oncology pharmacy and laboratory services.
