Park Ridge residents can sign up to walk or run every street in the city, all 140 miles, by Dec. 31.
The Community Health Commission launched the challenge, called We Run & Walk Park Ridge, on Oct. 1. Alderperson Lauren Rapisand introduced the program at a City Hall meeting on Monday, Oct. 5, as first reported by the Chicago Tribune. Rapisand said a man who recently finished running every street in Chicago inspired the local version.
She called it "a nice way to get out and explore the community."
Registration is free through the city's website. Participants who want automatic progress tracking can connect to CityStrides, a platform that uses an interactive map and leaderboard to log completed streets. That access costs $15 for three months, but the commission will waive the fee for anyone who requests it on the registration form. No questions asked.
CityStrides divides streets into checkpoints called "nodes." Passing all nodes along a street marks it complete. Compatible devices from Garmin, Coros and Suunto sync automatically, as do apps like Strava, Runkeeper and MapMyFitness. Manual tracking is also an option.
Every registered participant is automatically entered into weekly gift card drawings at local businesses. Anyone who finishes all of Park Ridge's streets earns eligibility for special prizes.
The commission is also selling a $23 map T-shirt, available in black and white, that shows every Park Ridge street. Participants can color in streets as they complete them. The first order deadline is Sunday, Oct. 11, at 11:59 p.m., with pickup on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Anywhere Fitness, 7650 West Touhy Ave., Chicago. A second round closes Sunday, Oct. 25, at 11:59 p.m., with pickup Thursday, Oct. 29.
Rapisand said the city might bring the challenge back in warmer months, but only if enough people participate this fall. Mayor Marty Maloney offered his own nudge at the Oct. 5 meeting: "So, people need to get hustling."
Registration and full details are available at the city's community health commission page linked above.
