Chicago Sky center Kamilla Cardoso is running a youth basketball camp Thursday, Aug. 6, at Maine West High School, bringing WNBA-level instruction to a gym that already holds two state championship banners.

The Kamilla Cardoso ProCamp runs from 9 a.m. to noon at Maine West, 1755 S. Wolf Rd. in Des Plaines. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6–15 and costs $99, according to the ProCamps registration page.

Maine West is part of District 207, which is headquartered in Park Ridge and serves students from Park Ridge, Des Plaines, Niles and surrounding communities. Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 is among the feeder districts.

About Cardoso

The 6-foot-7 Brazilian native was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft after winning two NCAA championships at the University of South Carolina. She's averaging 14.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game this season for the Sky, according to Journal & Topics.

Her best game of 2026 came June 26 against the Portland Fire: a perfect 13-for-13 from the field for 30 points in under 24 minutes.

"I can't wait to meet you, share my basketball journey, and see you on the court!" Cardoso wrote on Instagram when she announced the camp July 9.

Local basketball connection

The venue choice carries weight. Maine West's girls basketball program won undefeated state titles in 1987-88 and 2018-19, and is one of the few Illinois programs to reach 1,000 wins. The Warriors' Angela Dugalic, the 2020 Illinois Miss Basketball, was slated to play alongside Cardoso in the 2020 McDonald's All-American game before COVID-19 canceled it. That class also included Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese.

Dugalic, a Maine West alum, was selected ninth overall in the 2026 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics.

What campers get

Cardoso and a staff of area high school and college coaches will break participants into small groups by age, with a maximum 10-to-1 participant-to-coach ratio. The camp covers fundamental skills stations, contests and games. Each camper receives an autographed souvenir, a team photo with Cardoso and a limited-edition camp t-shirt.

Pro camps becoming a local tradition

Cardoso's camp is the first basketball-focused ProCamp in the area's recent run of pro-athlete events. Cubs outfielder Ian Happ held a baseball camp at Maine West on July 31, 2025, and Kyle Schwarber previously hosted camps at Maine South and in Rosemont.

The timing works for families gearing up for fall: District 207's first day of school for ninth graders is Aug. 12, with all students returning Aug. 13.
