Park Ridge police cited two juveniles for riding e-bikes while underage on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Officers issued municipal code citations to a 14-year-old and a 10-year-old, both Park Ridge residents, at 9:48 p.m., according to the Park Ridge Police Department's weekly summary of municipal code violations. Both citations list the same case number and the same time but different locations: one on the 2500 block of West Sibley Street and the other on the 500 block of Root Street.

Both riders are Park Ridge residents.

The charges fall under the city's e-bike ordinance, which took effect Jan. 1. Under those rules, riders must be at least 14 to operate a Class 1 or Class 2 e-bike and at least 16 for a Class 3 e-bike. E-bikes are also banned from all sidewalks citywide and from high-traffic areas including Uptown, South Park and the Higgins Corridor. Electric mobility devices are prohibited on all Park District, School District 64 and School District 207 property. The ordinance includes an exception for individuals with disabilities who need mobility devices for accessibility.

The Park Ridge City Council passed the ordinance in July 2025. In a January city announcement, Mayor Marty Maloney said the rules aim to promote safe, shared use of streets and sidewalks for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders.

Both juveniles are scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 3:30 p.m.

A separate weekly incident report from May 2026 documented two teenage suspects on e-bikes who threw water bottles at a pedestrian on the 1000 block of North Northwest Highway, striking the person in the head.

The citations also come as the city's local e-bike rules face a limited shelf life. Gov. JB Pritzker signed Senate Bill 3484 on Aug. 26, creating statewide e-bike regulations that take effect Jan. 1, 2027, according to Capitol News Illinois. The new state law raises the minimum age for Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes to 15, while keeping the Class 3 minimum at 16. The law also preempts local ordinances like Park Ridge's, meaning the city's current age rules will be superseded when the state standards take effect.
