Thomas Jones, 79, faces three felony charges after allegedly stabbing a blind resident at a Park Ridge assisted living facility.

Park Ridge police said Jones attacked a 73-year-old man who is blind and uses a wheelchair in the dining room of Summit of Uptown Assisted Living, 10 N. Summit Ave., around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, as WGN-TV reported. Jones allegedly stabbed the man in the abdomen with a knife.

A nurse stopped it.

A female nurse working at the facility witnessed the attack and physically tackled Jones to end the assault, police said. She sustained injuries during the intervention.

The victim, the nurse and Jones were all transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Park Ridge police news release cited by Fox 32 and the Chicago Tribune.

After receiving treatment, Jones was released into Park Ridge police custody and taken to the station for further investigation.

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved three felony charges against Jones: attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery to a nurse. All three are felonies.

Jones was then transported to the Second Municipal District Cook County Courthouse in Skokie for a detention hearing. The outcome of that hearing has not been made public.

The Park Ridge Police Department confirmed the response time at approximately 5:33 p.m. in a post on X.

The victim's name has not been released, and no information about a possible motive has been made public. Anyone with information can text "Tip ICARE" followed by their tip to 888-777.
