Des Plaines police officers fatally shot a 21-year-old man while responding to a domestic disturbance on Touhy Avenue on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Ayham Babidi of Des Plaines was shot in the 2000 block of Touhy Avenue just after 2:30 p.m., according to Des Plaines police. Firefighters performed CPR and transported Babidi to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead, the Journal & Topics reported.

Officers had been called to a home in the block for a reported domestic disturbance, police said.

The department has not released details about what led to the shooting or whether any weapon was recovered at the scene.

Babidi's father, Jamal Babidi, told WGN-TV his son had a documented mental health condition and had been released from a hospital about five days before the shooting. He said he was undergoing surgery on his arm when the incident happened. He said the only people at the house were his wife and son.

"I don't know why police shot him," Jamal Babidi told WGN-TV.

Jamal Babidi also told FOX 32 Chicago his son did not own a gun and questioned why an officer used a firearm.

The shooting shut down Touhy Avenue between Des Plaines River Road and Scott Street. Emergency responders blocked the road in both directions at about 2:45 p.m., according to the Journal & Topics. Yellow crime scene tape stretched across the roadway between Cedar Street and River Road.

The scene was near Touhy Avenue and Magnolia Street on Des Plaines' south side, close to the Park Ridge border. Touhy is an east-west corridor Park Ridge residents use to reach O'Hare International Airport and neighboring communities.

Police investigators photographed what appeared to be a pair of hedge trimmers and other objects in the roadway, according to an onlooker who spoke with the Journal & Topics. CBS Chicago reported video from the scene showed a hedge trimmer in the street, cordoned off by police tape and orange cones. It is unclear whether the tool is connected to the incident.

Neighbor Sherry Hernandez told CBS Chicago she saw squad cars and police tape go up, then heard a woman screaming inside the home. Residents who spoke with FOX 32 Chicago said at least one neighboring home was struck by stray bullets. Police have not confirmed that claim.

Des Plaines police said the incident was isolated and posed no ongoing threat to the public. The regional Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) is investigating and will conduct an independent, third-party review.

Police have not identified the officer or officers involved. No timeline for the investigation has been announced.
